Oral Sedation Dentistry

Oral Sedation Dentistry

At For Gentle Dental Care, we can cater to dental chickens through the use of oral sedation. Which involves administering a sedative drug orally, in pill or liquid form. This form of sedation is called “conscious sedation” because the patient remains awake throughout the procedure and experiences reduced anxiety or heightened relaxation.

Most patients report that they remember very little about the procedure itself afterward. Some even fall asleep entirely during their treatment! The medication administered is taken far enough before the appointment to prevent complications and ensure the patient is adequately sedated.

How Does Oral Sedation Dentistry Work?

Our dentist will help you determine which type of oral sedation is best for you based on the type of procedure you are undergoing and the number of hours you need to be relaxed. The type of oral sedation will either be a pill or liquid medication taken about an hour before the procedure, depending on how long your procedure is scheduled for.

By the time your treatment begins, you will be relaxed and ready for your procedure. You will not be able to drive after you take the medication, so plan to have someone take you home after your treatment.

Before your procedure, you must remove your removable dental work, like your retainers. You should avoid eating anything for at least six hours before you are administered the oral sedation. Most patients find that their dental anxiety is significantly reduced after they have been sedated for their treatments and many can even go on to have cleanings and exams without needing to be sedated at all!

The Benefits of Oral Sedation

Patients often avoid going to the dentist because of anxiety or fear of having dental treatments. However, these feelings of apprehension can make it difficult to maintain oral health and cause complications that may require expensive and extensive treatment. Many dentists offer sedation dentistry to help patients receive the care they need without fear and anxiety.

The benefits of oral sedation include:

  • Increased comfort during treatment
  • Decreased feelings of fear and stress
  • Quicker recovery time
  • Minimal side effects
